AUTHOR AND ENTREPRENEUR AGINAH CARTER-SHABAZZ SPEAKING TO 200 INMATES ON MAKING BETTER CHOICES AT THE CHESTER, PA. PRISON

Prominent cosmetologist, author and award-winning filmmaker Aginah Carter-Shabazz has joined with The Gathering of Men and Community at the SCI-Chester medium security prison for men to speak with inmates on Monday, February 2, 2009 in Chester, PA.

Aginah Carter-Shabazz was invited to speak at SCI-Chester following the DVD release of her feature-length documentary, Justice for Her, and premier of CHOICEZ, her first novel. CHOICEZ, is a memoir of a life of glamour and violence and speaks about the power of personal vision and the reality of negative inter-dependent relationships. Justice for Her, details how the relationships, Aginah’s daughter, Yonzetta “Nas” Hudson had with men, money and materialism led to a nearly fatal relationship with the criminal justice system. Corrections Classification Program Manager Phyllis Jones-Carter of SCI-Chester heard about Justice for Her and CHOICEZ, and ordered books for their book club and a DVD for inmate perusal. After an overwhelmingly positive response from the inmates, Jones-Carter contacted Carter-Shabazz to come share her experience with SCI-Chester inmates.

Team CHOICEZ: Aginah Carter-Shabazz, Safiyya Shabazz, M.D. and Rosa Lewis, Ph.D., will visit SCI-Chester prison to present a holistic workshop on making better choices. Specifically, Dr. Shabazz will provide information on making better choices regarding nutrition, personal and sexual health; while Dr. Lewis and Aginah Carter-Shabazz will lead discussion on increasing self-awareness, developing stronger personal relationships and decision-making skills that assist inmates in making better choices. The discussion aims to provide inmates with tools that support re-entry and advocacy for young men making better decisions and being accountable for their choices and actions.

Ms. Carter-Shabazz commented “We want to give back to encourage them to make better choices. We don’t want to judge people. They can change; they can see my experience and my daughter’s experience and know that change is possible.” No changes No change.

The SCI-Chester prison is home to inmates left with seventeen months prior to the expiration of their minimum sentence. The Gathering of Men and Community is a group of SCI-Chester prison residents that formed to address issues plaguing youth, families and the greater community.

Aginah Carter-Shabazz has a host of appearances coming up over the next several months. Earn Center (welfare to work program), ReelBlack Cable Television and Book Signings.
